idea that British trade interests must be maintained in northern ports was wrong.
Fr. Edkine said that the Committee thought that British interests, as distinct from British trade interests, should be maintained: and the Comptroller apparently concurred, 20 he had left liner requieition skips on the coast.
Lieut. 01dman agreed that he had done so in the past but this policy would probably be changed. This was one of the reasons for the appointment of Colonel Thomson, who would operate over the whole coast.
Mr. Shewan said that, if statistics were to be of any use, they must have statistics for the whole coast.
Mr. Sutherland pointed out that Hongkong was entirely different from Singapore. Many Japanese steamers came to Hongkong for the market, and they would leave if the market were dull. Allied and neutral shipping played a much more important part in Hongkong than in Singapore.
The Commodore said that the Committee had at first said that they could not give the number of coasters that could be spared. They had then said six. He and the requisition- -ing authorities had practically been doing the Committee's work.
Mr. Dodwell said that the Commodore's view apparently was that only foodstuffs and materials for the docks and sugar refineries were to be provided for. This meant the ruin of the Colony.
The Commodore and Lieut. Oldman said that this was not their view. For instance it was probably necessary for Rong kong to send rice to Canton, and this would be provided for.
Mr. Shewan said that the Governor had agreed that the present system was working very well. Statistics were entire- -ly misleading, and five months' figures were in any case of
no use.
